Unwanted Tags

I'm using Surfulater 3.42 on Windows7 Professional 64-bit. I rarely use the Tags feature, but today I decided to tag an article as +2 as a way to indicate that I found it exceptionally useful (I chose +2 to be sure that if an article contains the more common term +1, it won't be found by my search). I then searched for the article in the regular search box but couldn't find it, so I decided to try the Tag tree. It was there, but to my astonishment so too were dozens of other tags, including some that had no article using the tag. I am sure that I did NOT put all those dozens of tags on articles, but the articles are tagged. Frankly, I find this counterproductive--I want to be able to control what tags I use and when. Is there some feature that makes tags automatically, and if there is, how can I turn it off? I tried searching in Help and in the FAQs but couldn't find the answer to my question.

    Hi Joan,
There is no mechanism in Surfulater that automatically adds tags, although this has been requested. So I can't explain how these tags have been added, other than you having added them at some point in the past.

When you right click on selected text there is a menu option 'Add Tag from selection'. Maybe you've used that at some point.

Neville, something very strange is going on, because I am 100% certain that I did not put most of these tags on. I use tags only occasionally, whereas my tag tree shows about thirty different categories. As I said in my first message, some of the tags did not even have an article attached to them! And just now, I looked at a few of the articles and found at least one with the same tag twice.

As for right-clicking on selected text, I wasn't even sure what you meant. Certainly when I right click on text that I want to add, there is no "Add Tag from selection" option, nor is it there if I right click on an article that I've already added. Only in tree view is there any mention of tags, and I wasn't even aware of this until I poked around after reading your response. I've attached a screen shot of the box that appears when I right-click in tree view and select Tags--I have never before seen this box, so I am sure that I never used it. The only way I have ever added tags is to go to the bottom of the article in Surfulater and add something to the Tags section at the very bottom.

It seems clear to me that the overwhelming majority of these tags are being created without my knowledge or participation. I wish I could understand how.

    Joan,
By right click on selected text I meant in an Article in Surfulater. I think you thought I meant the Web Browser.

I wonder whether your Knowledge Base started out as the sample MyKnowledge.Surfulater which includes around 32 tags.

Oh, I see what you were referring to. There's a Tags option when I right-click on an article already in Surfulater, but 1) I wasn't even aware of that until now, and 2) when I click on that option, it brings up the box whose screenshot I posted the last time I wrote (see above message), and I am 100% sure that I NEVER used that box or even saw it before this discussion.

I thought for a minute that perhaps your idea about my knowledge base building on the sample MyKnowledge might be the answer. I no longer remember how I started my knowledge base, though I strongly doubt that I used MyKnowledge as its foundation. Moreover, I just looked at the MyKnowledge knowledge base, and though it contains a number of tags, there is virtually NO overlap between the tags there and the tags in my knowledge base. The tags in my knowledge base do relate to articles I have saved, but I did NOT add most of those tags. So the mystery continues.
