internet explorer 8 not showing web kb

Hi All -

I've just finished publishing a test folder from version 3.40 to a web kb. Firefox 3.6.13 is happy to display it, from either my local Win 7 64 bit machine, using XAMPP, or from the webserver site: http://artthrash.com/war/Nick%27s%20Stuff/5160/index.html (or indexweb.html)

Using IE8 32 bit, per a previous post on the old support site, the page title shows up (Surfulater Web Knowledge Base Viewer) but only a top light blue bar shows on the page. If I click on the small double arrow icon at the far right of that bar, the top line turns dark blue, showing the title Web Knowledge Base Viewer - Version 1.1 with two blank areas below labeled Knowledge Base Viewer and Content. Trying the 64 bit version of IE8 acts the same. This applies to either my local machine or the web server, contrary to Neville's post: http://help.surfulater.com/discussions/problems/4-blank-web-kb.

I've fiddled with IE8's 32 settings, making this a 'trusted zone', and tried the compatibility mode with no luck - for either a local or webserver call. Interestingly, the link to the sample kb from Neville's 'Local Web KB's not displayed in Browser' post works just fine (though shows Viewer version 1.0).

Though likely not much help with this issue, after setting the Tools->Internet Options->Security->Custom Level (for trusted sites) to Low, a call to the web server shows the dark blue top line with the blank Knowledge Tree and Content areas to start with - not the light blue one with the double arrow.

Have I missed an answer to this issue since the previous July post titled blank web kb , or in fact is there one?

Thanks, Nick

    Hi Nick,
This maybe the issue with Browser Security where certain browsers prevent access to local files as I wrote about here.

For the webserver site I suspect the apostrophe %27 or space %20 is causing the problem.

If you look in IE using Tools | Developer Tools you will various errors. Also in Chrome you will see 'Not allowed to load local resource: file:///F:/xampp/htdocs/artthrash/war/Nick's%20Stuff/5160/webpod.xml?_dc=1297630410270&node=ynode-9'.

I'd try a simple path without any punctuation or spaces in it.

    Hi Neville -

I didn't want to clutter up my first post to the forum with accolades
for the ability to create Surfulater structured html files, but I
consider it one of the best things about Surfulater for my two cents.
I'll post this with reasons why once we get past this IE8 issue. And
here's some ruminations after seeing your answer. I'll post directly to
the forum re: IE8 once I see better just what the problem is.
    ---------------

Hmm, I renamed the 'Nick's Stuff' folder on the web server to 'nick'.
Firefox still displays correctly (though if I point it at
..../indexweb.html, instead of ..../index.html it now displays the empty
outline as has IE8 been doing - I note that the only difference between
the two files seems to be the extra call to the stylesheet
    <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="web_kb_tree.css" />
And, I'm assuming that renaming the 'holding' folder causes no problems
with the display, all else being ok.

IE8 though still behaves the same - displaying a blank outline, even
when pointed at the 'nick' folder, so getting rid of spaces,
punctuation, in the url address doesn't seem to help. I'll have time
tomorrow to take a fresh look and will report back then.

Thanks, again, for being there and offering insight into the murky
    internet waters!
    Nick
